Every year in the United States, millions of dollars of structurally sound, perfectly functional personal protective equipment (PPE), tactical gear, and fire apparatus are legally mandated to be retired. Due to strict National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) calendar expiration regulations, U.S. first responders are forced to surplus or dispose of life-saving gear simply because it reaches an arbitrary date on a label—not because it lacks structural integrity.

Meanwhile, just a few hundred miles away in the Dominican Republic, local first responders routinely answer the call to fight devastating fires, manage technical rescues, and handle humanitarian crises without basic protection. Firefighters are frequently forced to enter burning structures in civilian clothing, or use severely degraded, compromised gear. This lack of resource equity leads to preventable injuries and tragic, avoidable losses of life.
